CAN WE MEET YOU
My name is Ronke Giwa and I am an On Air Personality (OAP) Or broadcaster like I like to refer to myself. A broadcaster with splash 105.5 Fm here in the city of Ibadan and I host the morning Splash from 7am-11am Monday's ,Tuesdays ,Thursday's and Friday's. I am very passionate about young girls. I have a sort of NGO called ' Who's that Girl' and its a mentorship program for young girls. I love to read, swim and I love to talk.
YOU ARE A FEMALE MENTOR AND ROLE MODEL , WHY HAVE YOU DECIDED TO GO IN THIS LINE ; BECAUSE YOU ARE A WOMAN ?
Well, I am glad , humbled to be called a mentor or role model and that's a lot of responsibility because there are lots of young girls looking at me and looking up to me and so its a big deal for me, and so how I portray myself or comport myself is very important especially in public. Like I said I have a soft spot for young girls ; am thinking how can I help , how can I help her not to make the mistakes I made or how can I help her to live a less challenging life. When I see girls especially ones raped for me its really just break my heart. When I see them I always love to offer a hug, words of advice, inspiration and many more. Although I have never been but I have come across quite a lot of young girls who have and for me my heart just goes out to them. Am wondering how can this person be whole again after such a traumatic ordeal.
FLIPPING THROUGH THE NEWSPAPER PAGES , ALMOST EVERYDAY WE FIND RAPE CASES. WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE RAPE.
Just this morning I was reading in the news that 5 out of every girl;can't remember the statistics now; students , girls has been raped and that for me is sad. That means 1,2,3,4,5 has been raped. I wonder what the world is turning into? What are we women doing, how are we raising our Sons ? Who are this Men ? Who are this boys ? For me 'No' means 'No' I preach that all the time. Sometimes I get the privilege to talk to boys and that's some of the things I tackle. If we don't talk to boys and all we do is cautioning the girls from not dressing this way that way, it won't take us anywhere. Look!majority of people that are raped are not people immorally dressed or people who go around naked. It is important to know that we most all dress decently. It is only an animal that sees a girl and just want to rape her. We most tackle the men / boys who go out of their way to rape girls , babies. No means no ! if a guy cannot comprehend that then he has screws loose!
FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE MENTORING YOUNG GIRLS AND LADIES HOW CONFIDENT ARE GIRLS WHEN THEY GET RAPED, DO THEY GET TO OPEN UP TO YOU AS A MENTOR?
How can a girl be confident after rape ! it takes a lot to build that confidence back. The first thing is that they start to feel like victims. For anyone out there watching it is not the end of the world, put yourself together and move on.
WHO SHOULD A RAPE VICTIM CALL AFTER THE INCIDENT ?
In a country where everything work, the Police should be the first to know. As for me I would advice the victim see a doctor first; get cleaned up and then present evidence if any. Our police will only be useful in this case when we get adequate orientation and punishment for this ' Dogs'
WHAT ADVICE WILL YOU GIVE TO A PREGNANT RAPE VICTIM, ABORTION ?
I won't advice abortion or either. I suggest you do what works for you.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF RAPE ON VICTIMS
The effects are endless. Rape victims suffer physical, emotional and even spiritual trauma. I do not have an organized NGO because of my busy life style with my job but I refer them to NGOs that can help and lead them right.
DO YOU THINK WE HAVE ENOUGH COUNSELORS IN NIGERIA?
I would say we have enough. We just don't know where to find them, go online you will definitely find quite a number of them. I think the Government need to give them more support and funds.
WHAT TYPE OF PUNISHMENT WILL YOU SUGGEST FOR RAPIST?
Castration! Any man, whose penis does not have a mind of its own, then cut it off. Against violence and my religious belief they should get a long jail term.
IS THE MEDIA DOING ENOUGH?
The media can definitely do more to help this issue such as educating boys and girls on rape and its effect.
NIGERIA MUSIC AND IMMORAL MESSAGES/ LYRICS
There are quite a number of songs promoting Rape. I am a type of person that take lyrics very seriously. Our musicians need to know that they are role models and fix things right.
