Many have been made to believe that job satisfaction depends on the paycheck, so they choose a career
path considering only the financial benefit only to discover later that there is something missing.
Some others have chosen career paths based on what the society considers “the ideal job” and later
resent and feel enslaved by their jobs because there is no sense of satisfaction or fulfillment from what
they do.
According to Steve jobs, your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be
truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And
the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t
settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find
it. This has something to tell us and that is “choose jobs that will satisfy you in ways that are deeper than
your paycheck.” To have a fulfilling career you need to pursue something that is in line with your calling.
According to Ed Young, your career is what you are paid for; your calling is what you are made for. If you want a fulfilling career, you need to take time to reflect and consider what your passion, strength
and deep interests are. The fact is that it is usually overwhelming and a great burden to do something that
you are not designed to do.
Your career is compatible with your calling if:-
(1) You have Inner Contentment: One of the vital signs that you’ve found a job that compliments your calling
is inner peace. Inner peace (or peace of mind) refers to a state of being mentally and spiritually at peace,
with enough knowledge and understanding to keep oneself strong in the face of discord or stress.
This is what happens when you are in your “niche” and living the life you were meant to live.
(2) It Comes Natural: The tasks involved are compatible with your gifts, skills and abilities. You don’t struggle to get things done. The whole thing seems natural to you; not that there won’t be challenging moments but somehow you will
always find a way to get the needed result.
(3) You receive enormous psychological paycheck:
This means you are enjoying what you do. You feel passionate, confident and committed to it. You don’t really mind if it demands going the extra mile. No matter how challenging your day might be on the job, you will at the end of the day have what someone once referred to as a “good tired day.” You go to bed
each day with the feeling that you’ve done something wonderful and meaningful.
If you dread the idea of working on your job every day, if you lack psychological grounding and mental
focus, if it keeps you burned out or depressed that’s the wrong job.
(4) Your genius is at its best: Your mind is constantly stimulated. You are making positive and creative
contributions even outside your job description or tasks. You are enthusiastic about opportunities
to learn new details and improve on your job.
(5) You are affecting lives positively: You see opportunities to make impact and add value to people
by solving a problem or improving their lives one way or the other.
